The image for this print comes from original artwork using watercolour, pastel and collage. Goldcrests are very small birds, weighing less than 6g, and they stay with us in the UK throughout the year. A distinctive gold crown on the top of its head likely gave the goldcrest its name of ‘king of the birds’ in European folklore. I decided to paint the goldcrest perched on a Chinese lantern branch after the lanterns were given to me. I love the striking orange colour of the lanterns, which were beginning to fade and become more papery at the start of winter.
